Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the difference between the EK43 and the EK43 S?
The EK43 S uses the same 98mm burrs and delivers the same grinding results as the EK43, but in a shorter body: 680 mm tall instead of 830 mm. It also has a smaller hopper (0.8 kg instead of 1.5 kg), which makes it a better fit for smaller spaces and lower volumes.
Can I use it for espresso?
Yes. The EK43 S grinds from Turkish fine to coarse filter, so you can use it for espresso, pour over, batch brew, and more. For espresso, set a coarser grind first, start the grinder, and then adjust down to the desired fineness while it is running.
Can I grind directly into a coffee bag?
No. Because of its lower height, the EK43 S is not designed for grinding into bags. Use a grounds container or dosing cup under the spout instead (not included).
Is it a single dose grinder?
The EK43 S grinds whatever is in the hopper, and you can open and close the hopper with a slider. Many baristas use it for single dosing by weighing their beans and grinding them one dose at a time.
How should I adjust the grind setting?
Only make the grind finer while the grinder is running. To avoid inconsistencies, set it about one unit coarser than your target first, then dial it down to the desired setting.
Is it suitable for commercial use?
Yes. The EK43 S is a commercial grinder with a maximum daily output of 240 kg and a maximum continuous grinding time of 40 minutes. It is not designed for continuous high-volume production.
How much space do I need?
The grinder measures 230 x 410 x 680 mm. Place it on a level, stable surface that does not vibrate.
Care & Maintenance
- After each use: Close the hopper slider, run the grinder until empty, and use the knocker to tap any remaining grounds out of the spout
- Daily: Remove the bean hopper and clean it inside and out with a damp cloth to remove coffee oils, which can affect taste. Dry it before refitting
- Every 2–5 days: Clean the grinding mechanism with a grinder cleaner such as GRINDZ™. Then grind the same amount of coffee beans to remove any remaining cleaner particles
- Weekly: Wipe the casing and the collecting tray with a damp cloth. Clean the spout and contact strips with a nylon-bristle brush
- What to avoid: Never immerse the grinder in water or clean it with a water jet. Don’t use harsh cleaners or metal tools, and don’t put the hopper or tray in the dishwasher
- Long-term: Burrs wear over time. If the grinder no longer grinds finely enough, contact an authorized Mahlkönig service center
